Baron Carlo Manniani, a sophisticated connoisseur and independent thinker, founded Acqua di Parma in 1916 as an alternative to lavish perfumes. In the early 1990s, three influential Italians, Diego Della Valle (Tod’s s.p.a), Luca Cordero di Montezemolo (Ferrari), and Paolo Borgomanero (La Perla), joined forces in a patriotic impulse to preserve Italian classicism, helping to develop the brand.
