Arts of Southeast Asia (Thames & Hudson - World of Art)

Descriere

The pagodas of Burma, the temples of Angkor, the great Buddhist monuments of Borobudur - these achievements of powerful courts and rulers were part of a broad artistic tradition including textiles, applied arts, vernacular architecture and village crafts. Covering Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Burma and the Philippines, Dr Fiona Kerlogue examines the roots and development of the arts of this distinctive region from prehistory to the present day. Broadly chronological, the book traces the different religions that have shaped the region's historic cultures - Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity - finishing with an exploration of the arts of the post-colonial period. With nearly 200 illustrations, over 100 in colour, a glossary of names and places and cues to further reading, the book is a comprehensive introduction to the arts and crafts of Southeast Asia. It is ideally suited to students, travellers and expatriates and will appeal to anyone with an interest in the region.
