The Suedwind Nova Kids Fun is a tall children's riding boot in plain black synthetic material, with Derby laces at the front and a zip at the back. The model comes from Suedwind's Basics line: everyday boots developed for children's feet. Maddelin carries the boot in sizes 29, 30 and 35 in the Normal version, and in sizes 36, 37 and 41 in Slim Tall. The word vegan in the name at Maddelin refers to the material: Suedwind describes the upper as a vegan faux leather. It is a synthetic material and not leather. Suedwind does not state exactly which synthetic it is, and the brand gives no statement on glue or sole either. Derby laces at the front What sets the Kids Fun apart from the Glitter version is the laces. Suedwind calls them Derby laces: open lacing at the front on the instep, as on a classic laced boot. They give the boot the look of a field boot. The zip is at the back, with elastic alongside it. Inside and sole The lining is mesh, described by Suedwind as breathable. The outsole is rubber. The midsole contains a shank, a stiffened strip under the arch. Suedwind writes that the Basics offer comfort and flexibility in the stirrup; the brand publishes nothing on the tread of the sole or the height of the heel. Sizes for younger and older riders The model runs from size 29 to 41. That makes it usable from a small pony rider to a teenager. The variants at Maddelin are spread across that whole range: the small sizes in the Normal version, the larger ones in Slim Tall. Normal and Slim-Tall are Suedwind size names; on the leather sister model, for which a guide in centimetres does exist, Slim-Tall stands for a narrower calf and a taller leg. Suedwind does not publish that guide for this synthetic model. Plain black in competition The Kids Fun is entirely black, without a coloured top or decoration. How the rulebooks view colour varies. The national dressage rulebook asks for black, single-coloured riding boots or boots in the colour of the jacket, and through the pony annex this also applies to pony riders. The LRV asks for black riding boots for riders and pony riders and states explicitly that they may or may not have laces. In FEI showjumping, black boots are allowed and the rulebook asks for boots with a heel for Children and Pony Riders. Each federation sets its own rules, by discipline, level and country, and those rules change: check the applicable rulebook before the competition.
