But their differences don't define them, as they form a steadfast and durable friendship based on their deep concern for each other and the familiar warmth of their yearly meetings. These are the themes explored by Dr. B.F. Battistoli in The Duck & the Seagull.n nEach spring after Cedric flies from his home in Canada to Rockport Harbor in Massachusetts, he and Angelina float in their favorite place, the calm waters inside the protective jetty. And just like any good friends they look for snacks, chat and play together.n nBut when Cedric spots some colorfully patterned harlequin ducks overhead, he longs to fly away with them, momentarily forgetting the treasure he has for something new and different. It's in this odyssey that Cedric learns what true friendship means: someone being there for you when you weren't always there for them.n nIn a time where examples of the divisive and mean-spirited abound in the adult world, the characters in Dr. Battistoli's book help reassure children that kindness is strength and our real friends sometimes see value in us more than we see in ourselves.n
